Trevor Siemian: starting quarterback for the defending Super Bowl champions.
Siemian, 23, a former seventh-round pick out of Northwestern without a regular-season NFL pass attempt to his name, was appointed the starter Monday by the Denver Broncos after an intriguing preseason position battle.
“I’m impressed,” Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said after Saturday night’s preseason game. “I think he’s very calm. I can tell by the way he handles the team in the huddle, he’s got control of what’s going on. What I see is I see a guy getting better every time out.”
As Siemian officially inherits the starting job from Peyton Manning, it adds further doubt to the fate of Mark Sanchez.
The former Jets and Eagles quarterback was in pole position to win the QB job after being acquired this offseason, but faltered badly in his audition. He now faces the humiliating prospect of being demoted to third string behind rookie Paxton Lynch — or being cut from the roster entirely.
