James was born the seventh child in the DeBarge family to his father of French descent and his mother of African-American ancestry. Alongside his brothers Mark, Randy and nephew Andrew, James performed on tours as DeBarge music group, performing R&B, soul, funk and pop. The band was active throughout the late ‘70s and the ‘80s, and released six studio albums: “The DeBarges”(1981), “All This Love”(1982), “In a Special Way”(1983),“Rhythm of the Night”(1985), “Bad Boys”(1987) and “Back On Track”(1991). Their third album, “Rhythm of the Night” turned out to be the group’s best-seller, featuring a single by the same name, which came close to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. Overall, DeBarge made five top 40 pop singles, nine Top 40 R&B singles, five top ten R&B singles, two pop top ten hits, a number one single on the dance chart, and three number one hits on the adult contemporary chart before disbanding in 1989. Regardless, this period established James’ net worth.

Since 2000, James has worked with DJ Quick on several tracks such as “Tha Divorce Song”, and “Get Nekkid” by slain rapper Mausberg. In 2004, he released a song with Won-G for a remix called “Nothing’s Wrong”, and then made a guest appearance on the “818 Antics” album by rapper J-Ro in 2006. The DeBarge band was featured in a “Flashback to the 80s” concert at San Manuel Casino in Highland, California, performing alongside Atlantic Starr, Mary Jane Girls and The SOS Band. Despite not the top billed act, DeBarge performed three encores and James was handling the lead vocals. He performed with his brothers Mark and El during a gospel service in 2007.

However, in 2012 James was arrested and imprisoned for assault with deadly weapon and charged with drug possession. He was released from prison three years later and has been drug free since.

In his personal life, DeBarge was briefly married to pop singer Janet Jackson from 1984-86; a rumor has it that he and Janet have a daughter. James has three acknowledged children and his oldest child, Kristinia, appeared on the American Juniors show in 2003, later receiving a recording contract with Island Def Jam Records.
